Automatic
Litter Boxes
Thinking about getting a
automatic litter box? Automatic litter boxes that I've seen and
used have two main problems. One is what happens if a cat is in or
around the box when it starts to clean, the other is the
maintenance and having one more appliance to break. The cost can
be an issue too.
Because we often rescue cats,
litter boxes are a big deal around our house. Having several cats
sequestered in different areas of the house due to social and
medical issues, we have a lot of litter boxes. So any way I can
lessen the load on litter box cleaning can be a big help.
And we've tried just about every
type of litter box and litter. Crystals, clay, clumping, sand,
natural shavings, even recycled newspaper. We go through a lot of
litter so price is always a factor too.
Paying $100 to $300 for a device
that easily breaks, can freak out your cat so they never go near
the litter box again, makes weird noises (usually at night), and
is even dangerous to your pet is not my idea of a solution.
Plus most automatic litter boxes
have no way to remove the smell and to many people that's a very
important factor. Having the used litter and remains hanging
around for up to a month makes for quite a clean up too.
For that matter, doing a thorough
cleaning at the end of how ever long you choose to wait to clean
the automated unit can make it a much bigger cleaning job. The
combs or whatever device used to clear the used litter and remains
is no small chore.
I won't even go into all the
adventures we've had (way too many to mention here) with litter
box problems. But after years of dealing with litter boxes I think
I have found a great solution. It's not full automatic but it is self
cleaning. It's a 99% solution that meets all of our demands.
It's labeled as a self cleaning litter box, and it's
as close to automatic you can get without motors and mechanics.
You do have to participate. It
has a mechanism that allows you to rock the litter box to one side
and collects all of the used or soiled material to fall into a drawer. You can then remove and empty the drawer without
actually touching the litter. It takes about two minutes and
you're done.
The units have a hood, which we
like since many of our permanent resident cats can get pretty wild
in the litter box. So no litter on the outside of the litter boxes
or near misses. That always make the job just that more
aggravating when you get to spend an extra 10 minutes cleaning up
the floor and surrounding areas.
We use a private label clumping
litter that we get at a bulk price and with the combination of the
automatic litter boxes, this makes our life a lot easier. The litter
boxes are very reasonable, even cheap, when you compare to their competitors.
Around $37 in most stores. You can learn more about it by clicking
