Scratching
Posts for Cats
I learned this little scratching
posts for cats trick years ago by accident. I had an apartment at
the time with a wood burning fireplace. My girlfriend had found a
kitten by work rummaging around for food and brought it home. After
it ate for about hour and slept for another 2 hours the little
girl kitten went right over to the fireplace woodpile and started
scratching.
I had seen cats scratching trees
on many occasions but it never really dawned on me until that
event that just a piece of firewood would be a great cheap
scratching post for cats. And it's easy to replace.
Every time I go get firewood I
pick out a smooth surface piece that stands well and put them
around the house for our cats. They love them and if you make sure
you clean it up and take off any bark it's pretty much maintenance
free.
I've even gotten a few squires of
outdoor peel and stick carpet pieces to put on the logs for a
change of pace for the cats. They usually cost about .80 to a
dollar and the cats think it's a brand new scratching post.
This homemade scratching posts
work great to put in places where your cat may be trying to
scratch something they shouldn't like a piece of furniture or
couch. They'll go right for the piece of wood rather than the item
you're trying to protect.
You always want to make sure the
wood doesn't have insects or any critters in the wood. And you
might want to check the surface to make sure it doesn't splinter
or chip off. Old dry ones aren't the best, since they are more
likely to have both problems.
You don't need to spring for a
$50 and up for a carpet covered fancy scratching post your cat,
especially since they tear them up in a short time. And they look
pretty bad after a cat has used them for a few weeks or month.
Even if you don't have a
fireplace you can still get some fireplace wood and use them for scratching posts for cats. You could probably decorate it any way
you want to either make it blend in or stand out. Just like any
good idea it's simple and cheap.
